My Work Is Different

This blog will present a photographer's perspective of a photo shoot -- directed at models, especially new models.

There will be a big difference. Unlike most photographers, I do not shoot glamor or other commercial work. My work touches on the artistic, although there are many much more qualified artistic photographers in existence.

I do two kinds of shoots, and one two kinds. The majority of my shoots take place indoors. But not in studios. A studio would automatically bring in the glamor and commercial traits of a shoot.

No, I shoot exclusively in upscale hotel room around the world. And I bring very little equipment with me. I do not bring any artificial lighting. No bright lights with color gelatins. No soft boxes. No reflectors. No synchronized strobe lighting.

I work exclusively with the light that comes through the hotel window, and whatever lamps are available to me in the room. That immediately realist in two things you will rarely see in the photography of women. First, you get a much softer look to the photograph -- softer, which I think complements the very nature of a woman's being. You also get more even lighting throughout the entire room. So the photograph brings the woman in synch with the room, and vice versa.

There is a third benefit to this approach to photography. The woman you are working with is much more likely to relax more quickly -- which leads to more photos that are of greater quality artistically than when shooting in the cold confines of a studio, with as many as a dozen other people milling about.

Which brings me to a fourth benefit. I work alone. I have been fortunate to have been able disarm a model's tension very quickly. And that gives us a bond of trust, which leads us into a creative space for the remaining hours of the shoot.

Those are the initial points I wanted to share with for this first entry. There will be more to follow.
